‘Londoners will head to the polls on 6 May to elect a mayor and 25 London Assembly members.’
For anyone who received the leaflet of candidates for the London assembly and Mayor of London, you have probably seen the hilarious candidates that are standing to election.
The leaflet itself contains instructions of how to vote, local votes, lists of candidates and much more. Everyone’s thoughts on politics are different; I grew up in a Liberal Democrat household and the party that I most agree with is probably the Lib Dems. When my mother gave birth to me, she was standing for Parliament. I spent my first 9 months of my life meeting hundreds of people as we went around together knocking on doors. Since then, she has also tried to be selected as a parliamentary candidate, but unfortunately, she did not get elected. At the moment, my father, Robert Blackie, is standing for election in the 2021 London Assembly and is currently 3rd place on the Liberal Democrat London Assembly list.
Along with the political parties, there are also independent candidates for Mayor, such as Brian Rose, founder/host/CEO of the London Realist party and Count Binface (no joke!). When I opened the leaflet and looked at Brian Roses’ first point of action, I was in a laughing fit.
Let me tell you why : A THIRTY ONE DAY FESTIVAL!
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no-one (not even the mayor) is allowed to throw a festival. I don’t think having a household only party counts as a festival, by the way. As anyone out there who likes to go to festivals knows, festivals typically last 2–7 days, NOT 31. He almost definitely will not get elected but if he does (hopefully not), the first festival this year will take place!
Lastly, let me say that although he says he is going to throw a festival, it is illegal and the Mayor does not have permission to bend lockdown rules, even if Dominic Cummings, the PM’s advisor, bent the rules and got away with it.
Before ending my first blog, I need to talk about one of the other independent candidates; Count Binface, a ‘self-proclaimed interplanetary space warrior’.
His campaign is to get London to have more bins, re-name London Bridge Phoebe Waller Bridge and finish Crossrail. Renaming London Bridge is not a priority when in London there are much more important issues that need solving. Finishing Crossrail is important as public transport drastically lowers emissions and is far more important than renaming London Bridge. Getting London more public bins is a good policy to stop littering but more private bins are not needed.
